I'm not entirely sure about whether this is true, but I was clicking on Piles of Silky Sand on my FULL INVENTORY Revenant (she only has 24 slots). But for some reason I did not get any coarse sands, and I wasted almost a stack before realizing.
Conclusion + Tl;dr: If you have full inventory, seems like Piles of Silky Sand won't give you any coarse sands. Only gives Crests and Geodes.
